I'm a freelance journalist and travel writer working between the UK and the Balkans: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Albania, Romania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Bulgaria.
I write news, travel and features for the Guardian, the Observer, the Financial Times, The Economist's 1843 Magazine, the Telegraph, the Sunday Times and Arts magazines like Ocula. My travel writing takes a ‘backdoor Balkans’ approach: I've driven around Serbia on vintage Yugo cars, danced on tables to Roma music in Belgrade taverns, paraglided into a vineyard in Slovenia, and been invited to Balls with Transylvanian Counts in semi-ruined castles.
I grew up partly in Naples and studied History and Archaeology in Edinburgh and Turin. I've also lived and worked in Beijing, Belgrade, Pristina and Sarajevo. Much of my writing focuses on food & wine, hidden histories, culture, craft and community rituals.
I speak Italian (C1), good French and BCMS (Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian).
